  • Film Acquisitions, Marketing & Distribution in Malaysia

Day 1 - 10 June 2024

Financial Literacy for Fresh Graduate

The first meeting is with Mr. Shandy Lee from Maybank. Today he shared with us how to save and make money work for us.

One of the things about saving money is to spend on ourselves, set aside some money to save or to invest, and know what we are spending our money for. Another thing is to not owe money if not needed, it is to avoid unnecessary debts accumulating, and lastly review our savings, expenses, and debts, this is to help us manage our financial situation.

Mr. Shandy told us that we should also focus on our growth and career, have a plan, and not recklessly use our savings, because they can be used for future emergencies.

Another thing I learned about saving is that if I want my money to grow, then what can I do is set aside some money I am willing to risk for investment. Study how to invest and build my portfolio, don't recklessly follow others just because they are doing it.

The Art of Storytelling

We met with our speaker Ms. Low Ngai Nyuen, who shared her career experiences throughout her years working and what impact she has made to change society through storytelling.

Ms. Low has achieved a lot of achievements in her career and has created a lot of positive movements that change society's behavior towards the environment. She shared with us a few key points such as:

When do we storytell?
  1. Access complex information
  2. Foster a sense of shared purpose
  3. Present cases persuasively
  4. Inspire adoption and traction
  5. Engage, connect, and build trust
All points above have their own purpose, but this is how she was able to create a story that attract people attention to a problem. Another thing she shared with us is how to a frame a story?

To frame a story we first must know who is our audience, and structure elevation.

REFLECTION

The beginning of the week started off great with informative and useful stuff that I can relate to and use to apply in my future, even though some sessions were quite different from what I expected it to be the end results weren't so bad as I was able to explore about other knowledge of different industries.

It was a bit difficult for me to comprehend how some industries work, like the GenAI and its impacts on changing the labor in some sectors of industry or the Acquisition process in the film industry. Overall, it is informative knowledge that makes me know more about certain aspects of the industry that I don't usually look at.

Lastly, besides being an informative session this was a good experience because we were able to directly ask questions about the speakers/professionals' personal opinions when it came to their preferences or sharing their experience first-hand.
