LECTURE

Week 6: Poster Design Execution

This week, we learn about Public Service Announcement (PSA) posters, PSA is a message in the public interest disseminated without charge, with the objective of raising awareness of, and changing public attitudes and behavior towards, a social issue.

Once you’ve narrowed down your scope, you can start to do:

  1. Research about your topic
  2. Define your concept
  3. Start to develop your design projects

Things to do:
Research about your topic
  1. Study and gather all related information about your topic.
  2. Write a summary about your topic
  3. Highlight the key points of your summary
  4. Define the Title
  5. Define the Slogan
  6. Define the Details
  7. Define the Call For Action
Define your concept
  1. Create a section for each content (Title, Slogan, Details & Call for Action)
  2. Sketch your mockup poster
  3. Fill in with details
Decide on Idea, and approach:
How does the designer EVOKES viewer’s feelings, deliver a strong impression?
  • Shock Value →Brutal
  • Provocative  →Upsetting
  • Humor          →Sarcastic
  • Sensitive      →Heartwarming
  • Artistic          →Subtle

Exercise 2 Part 1

For this exercise, we are going to turn and black and white color then fill it with colorings.

By using photoshop, I follow the steps that Mr. Martin has provided us.

Fig. 2.1

The first is to download the image provided in the drive, then I added a layer for the face.

Fig. 2.2

Next, using the brush and adjusting it. cover the face with skin color.

Fig. 2.3

Then use the blending mode, we can use either overlay or soft light, so I use soft light for my image and then adjust the color by hue/saturation. Then do the same for the hair and eyes.
Fig. 2.4 soft light

Fig. 2.5 overlay

After that, I make a new layer and rename it as 'bg' (background), then I go to edit and fill. Using the quick selection tool, I select the location around the face or background, then use the polygonal lasso tool to help make it look neater.
Fig. 2.6

Lastly, I masked the selected layer in the background layer and use overlay, I also adjust the color with hue/saturation.

This is my final design.

INSTRUCTION

B&W Task
For this task, we have to color the grayscale photo given.
Fig. 3.1
We will have to use the colored ones to be the hair and skin color.

Fig. 3.2

Then we need to use the eyedropper tool to copy the colors needed later. When masking, we need to select and mask, then use refine edge brush tool to have more detailed masking for the hair.

Fig. 3.3

Fig. 3.4

Then using the colors we make a solid color then drag the masked layer to the solid color.
Fig. 3.5

We repeat this step for the skin and the rest.

Project 2

Week 5: Research

Research on "mental health affected by COVID19":

  1. How are you, as an individual affected by COVID19? Physically and mentally? Are they related?
  2. Research online: "young adult/student's mental health affected by COVID19", save/bookmark the articles that you are interested. Make a summary of each article.
  3. View posters on Pinterest limited to posters designed with IMAGES/PHOTOS and texts, bypass posters designed with graphics and texts. PIN the posters that you like, ask yourself what do you like about the selected posters? The composition? The color? The way has the message has been delivered?
  4. View posters on Pinterest limited to PSA posters only. PIN the posters that you like, ask yourself what do you like about the selected posters? The composition? The colour? The way the message been delivered?
Post your finding on Blog under Project 2.

For my poster, I plan to make a positive encouragement. Below are a few sketches I did.

Then I start to look for pictures I could use for the posters.

Since this picture has a watermark, I can't use it.

I thought this was already good, but I was wrong. Mr. Martin point out all my mistakes and after looking and reflecting on my poster, I think that he was right. So I change my posters.

This time I tried to relate it to the aftereffect of covid on people.

below is my progress for 2nd attempt.

Below is the result.

This time my topic of the poster is depression, I also make this poster to give a positive impact on people. Even though the covid has reduced ever since it started, many people still got the impact from the long period of isolation, which causes people to have anxiety, depression, etc.

FEEDBACK

Week 6/...

Week 7/...

Week 8/...

Week 9

The poster doesn't look like it is related to Covid 19 and shouldn't be just one picture, the Type Font also needs to be improved. The poster gives a feeling of commercial or business-like feeling instead and can't be related to Mental Health.

REFLECTION

I very much have reflected on what I have been doing while making the 1st poster. I am still not very good at composition, especially when choosing a typeface. This is why I am very relieved that Mr. Martin approved my 2nd poster. Next time, I will try to stay on topic and make it relatable to the main theme, as well improving my skill in composition and type fonts.
