LECTURE

Week 6: Typographic Exploration &Communication

In the sixth week, Mr. Vinod discusses Task 2 and checked on our progress. He showed us an example of a student's good work and gave reasons why the design is good.

From this week's lecture, I learned that I could do a few things to make my design better and he also points out some of the mistakes done and gave instructions on how to do it correctly.

To create the layout, we have to make a page with the size 200 x 200mm, then tick the "facing pages" box. Then we create the layout with the text that has been provided in the Facebook files.

After finishing the layouts, we need to make pages that show the layout of our finished Text Format, by putting gray or black boxes.

INSTRUCTION

Task 2

Firstly before making the digital version, I make sketches of the layout I want to make later.

Fig. 2.1

Then I went to Facebook and using notepad I copy the text.

After finish copy the text I start doing the task in InDesign.

Fig. 2.4

When I did this, I was very confused why the text alignment was too big, and I tried to adjust the size of it but it didn't work either, so I let it be for now.

This was the first layout design I made, then I begin to make the second one.

Then when the class start, Mr. Vinod notice something wrong with my layout, so he asks me what's is wrong with the layout and point out some of the mistakes as well giving me directions on how to fix this.

Then I went to redo the layout as well.
Using the first layout, I adjust some parts, and below is the progress.

Fig. 2.9 Progress

In the picture above, I think that the layout looks very good, but too much illustration makes the attention, not on the words.
Fig. 2.10 Progress

This time I tried to emphasize the title by using contrast, and then I felt that the middle was too distracting.
Fig. 2.11 Progress

Which is why I erase the middle lines and felt that the picture above look much better, and this time I felt that there is nothing distracting the words.

Then in the final design, I recheck if there is anything that's wrong, so to make sure, I also rewatched the videos as well last week's class.

FEEDBACK

Week 6

Week 7
Specific feedback:
  • Exploration is very limited. Headline seems to have no idea, the use of graphical elements distracts from the main content. Awkward layout, balance and white space needs to be considered properly.
  • formating at top of page needs checking. Title is not consistent with label as well. Feedback lacking, further reading is missing.

REFLECTION

Week 6
In week 6, Mr. Vinod has pointed out my mistakes in the layout adjustment. There are still many places that need to be improved and I think I still need to explore many more layout designs because looking at my layout this time, it doesn't look very good.
