LECTURE

Week 8

For this week were are going to do another project, Ms. Jinchi has shared the lecture video in Teams.

Sense of Place (The Importance of Observation)

Being observant means being attentive to your surroundings, paying attention to the details, and being analytical about them.

Then Ms. Jinchi shows a video on how to become more observant.
Fig. 1.3 (Lecture)

How to be more observant:
  1. Know your subject
  2. Slow down and look outward
  3. Try something new
  4. Improve your concentration by cutting distractions
  5. Challenge yourself to a mental workout
  6. Test your observation by playing a memory game
  7. Record and consider your observation
  8. Stay inquisitive
Observing is an act of inquiring information, through the senses, of a subject matter in its natural setting. Our senses are important for us to know, feel, understand, analyze, and even plan what we want to do.

Observation is important for designers as it enables them to see "problems", as well as get ideas for solutions to those problems

Sense of Place
  • Now think about the place you're in now or a place you had spent some time previously, or, a place that had created a lasting memory in you.
  • How do you express that sense of place?
  • Start by documenting your observations - photographs, diary, talking to relevant people, etc.

There is another way to express the sense of place, illustration, photography, etc.

Research

Most of the ones I found are the ones with furniture, so I change my keywords to art.

I found it very interesting to add some imagination to it.

I am still unsure of what should I design for this topic, but after reading the module again, I have an idea or two that I want to express.

Since it is to express our chosen location, I wander around my house and look outside from the roof. But since I rarely go out, I don't really have any sense of attachment to it, except for a few places where I hang out with my families often.

If I choose one of my favorite things and place I like it is sleeping or watching in my bedroom. But if anything that is still lasting in my memory it is sitting on a chair and waiting for my appointment, maybe because I do this very often recently It give me an impression and just pops out when it comes to something to remember.

Fig. 3.2
I did 2 sketches, the first one is the bedroom, well not exactly my bedroom, it is just some imagination of the room I wanted, my room doesn't even have a window. I just want to express my comfort zone where I feel most comfortable. For the windows, there is a reason for it to be partly open and closed, It is to express that some part of me is just attracted to the outside world but some part of me was not particularly attracted to go out. I also plan to make it a night time then put some city lights in the window frame to show nightlife, as for the fish, I thought that if I use fish floating in my room then my room will be my own fish tank where I am on my bed enjoying my time.

For the 2nd sketch, it is a place where I also wait for my appointment. When sitting to wait for my turn, I don't know what should I do while being bored thinking what to do besides waiting. There I often let my own imagination go wild or maybe just look  the cars and motorcycles pass by outside. Here, I am very conscious of time flow, which is why I added the clock.

After thinking I use the second sketch for this topic. Below is the result.

I added the person because I think if there is a person who is playing with the phone then there would be a sense of doing things to past time.

REFLECTION

At first, I honestly thought that sense of place is just taking a picture or a place in my surroundings, so I almost use an ad board for this task, I was really confuse by what does sense of place mean. I literally took it as a place that give presence. After looking at the video lecture and others progress, I finally knew what does sense of place mean... well somewhat. But at least I know what I should do for this task.
