LECTURES

In the fifth week, Mr. Martin taught us about the development of posters, and then he tell us a brief about the next project.

Conceptual Poster Design

Posters are a convenient medium to convey information to the target audience. It can be cluttered or straightforward. If too many colors, fonts, images, or animated figures are involved in conveying information or message, it confuses the viewers.

The power of posters in generating awareness on an issue or conveying a brand message and luring the audience into buying products or services is immense.

When starting to brainstorm for a poster's idea, you need to ask yourself why you are making this poster.

  • Is it a poster for brand awareness?
  • Is it an advertising poster?
  • Is it a public service announcement poster?

What is the meaning of a Public Service Announcements?

A public service announcement (PSA) is a message in the public interest disseminated without charge, with the objective of raising awareness of, and changing public attitudes and behavior towards, a social issue.

Once you’ve narrowed down your scope, you can start to do:

  • Research about your topic
  • Define your concept
  • Start to develop your design projects
Things to do:

1. Research about your topic

  1. Study and gather all related information about your topic.
  2. Write a summary about your topic
  3. Highlight the key points of your summary
  4. Define the Title
  5. Define the Slogan
  6. Define the Details
  7. Define the Call For Action

2. Define your concept

  1. Create a section for each contents (Title, Slogan, Details & Call for Action)
  2. Sketch your mock up poster
  3. Fill in with details

3. Start to develop your design projects
  • Draft the digital poster based on your sketch
  • Develop the composition techniques using Digital Photography & Graphic Design.
  • Apply color, typography, textures & effects
  • Finalize your design with color correction
Creative posters where meaningful information comes wrapped with striking pictures and images.

Creative Poster is made up of four key features:
  • Title,
  • Graphic,
  • Text,
  • White space.
Layout, flow, and color affect the order and style of these four key features.
Fig. 1.6 (Source: Lecture)
Title
The title is a descriptive indicator of the contents of the poster, and it should not exceed two lines of text.

Text
The text should clearly describe the message clearly but not overloaded.

Graphic (Photo)
Graphics must appear in context with the main text. Choose high-resolution images (300 dpi or higher).

White space
White space creates “breathing room” within poster, which helps viewers avoid feeling overwhelmed by the information being presented.

Layout
There are many design layout .
For our project, we suggest graphics-centered layout.

Flow
Flow coordinates with how readers’ eyes move around the different sections of poster. Maintain Hierarchy While Displaying Your Message.

Colour
Color draws reader’s gaze and define the different sections of your poster.

Will My Design Create An Impact?
  • What is the purpose of my poster design?
  • Am I clearly depicting the idea of my poster design?
  • Does my poster convey its message meaningfully and beautifully?
Before we attempt to do our project Mr. Martin first set an example of how he edited Shazam into the Hearth Mansion, not only do we need to pay attention to lighting, we also need to see the surrounding as well, example there is water in front, so there should be a reflection and also shadow to make the person is really there not a ghost.

In the lecture slide provided by the teacher, the slide has a brief tutorial to understand the use of:

  • Quick Selection Tool
  • Layer Mask
  • Filters
  • Color Correction

He had included a video link to the step-by-step tutorial in the slide as well as the material needed to make the task.

After doing this step by step, it should look like this.

Week 5: Research

Research on "mental health affected by COVID19":

  1. How are you, as an individual affected by COVID19? Physically and mentally? Are they related?
  2. Research online: "young adult/student's mental health affected by COVID19", save/bookmark the articles that you are interested. Make a summary of each article.
  3. View posters on Pinterest limited to posters designed with IMAGES/PHOTOS and texts, bypass posters designed with graphics and texts. PIN the posters that you like, ask yourself what do you like about the selected posters? The composition? The color? The way has the message has been delivered?
  4. View posters on Pinterest limited to PSA posters only. PIN the posters that you like, ask yourself what do you like about the selected posters? The composition? The colour? The way the message been delivered?
  5. Post your finding on Blog under Project 2.

Exercise 1 Part 1

Using the image provided by the teacher, I first started doing Shazam.
Fig. 2.1

Fig. 2.2

Following the instruction in the slide, I then use the Quick selection tool.
there were some that got too little and too much, so I use polygon tool, to make it neater.
Fig. 2.3

Then I use the Transform tool to adjust Shazam size.
Fig. 2.4
Then I adjust the colors.

Next is adding the shadow and noise.
Fig. 2.6
Then the reflection.

Exercise 1 Part 2: My Reflection

For our second task, it is to make our own image into the finished Shazam. First I planned to have the picture taken outside but unfortunately, it always rain these days and I have not been able to have time to take a picture with good light. So I took it inside.

Then I repeat the steps from the lecture.
